It's been a while since I last ate here to I will keep the food part of this review brief - the mussels with cider and chorizo are incredible, as is the sizzling steak fajitas.
Service has always been quick and friendly, absolutely no complaints here.
Now for the drinks!
The espresso martini is great. Very well balanced flavours and made with a strong, dark roast coffee and just a hint of smooth vodka coming through. Just right!
Next up is the Smokey Old Fashioned (my personal favourite).
Made using Woodford Reserve bourbon, maple syrup, a drop of bitters and oak smoke, served in a corked vial along side a glass and ice ball it is sure to get some fleeting glances and the occasional diner stopping the server to ask "what is that?" as it is brought to you.
I like to swirl it in the vial a little before pouring over the ice ball and letting the smoke settle over the glass before the first taste. Sweetness from the syrup going in to a bourbon sharpness and completed with a light smokey finish.
This is a drink which pleases almost all of your senses.
Have you been to GoTC and not ordered this drink? Well I guess you better get back there and give it a try! What are you waiting for? -

Went for lunch with friends. They are regulars here, and say the crispy salt and pepper fajitas are the best. I had the rag top steak and ale suet pudding - it was amazing. One other person had the burger with bacon and kimchee. A mix I had not heard of before but she swore was amazing. They were busy, service was fast and friendly, and the prices were reasonable. I'll definitely be back

I have always heard good things about grill on the corner but it has always been out of my price range so when a friend mentioned they were doing 50 % off food in january i was excited to finally give it a go!
I had tweeted them asking about a gluten free menu and they replied stating they did however it took them 4 days to mail me a copy .... and what they mailed me was simply an allergen sheet.
Not put off i still went ahead!
The interior of the restaurant is simply stunning. Lots of twinkling lights and black and white theme throughout. Our waitress was lovely and attentive however when i asked for the gf menu i was simply brought an allergen sheet again.
Starter wise there was only 1 optiom that could be made gluten free which i wasnt keen on so i skipped that. Main i had the corn chicken supreme. This came only with green veg so i chose a side of chips. The main menu is really limited in choice and the steaks were all labelled with containing gluten however i was told that they could be done without.
The supreme was nice ... 2 chicken breasts but it wasnt very filling i was glad to have ordered the fries.
For dessert i had pischacio ice cream which was devine!
Overall it was nice but unless they improve the gluten free menu and have a special like this i wouldnt rush back. -

A birthday treat for Clare S, this was my first visit to this well known establishment. First impression are interesting, walking through past the bar to the restaurant I was struck at just how big the space was. It's an odd layout with a mostly empty bar as you enter, but after a warm greeting we were taken straight through to our seats. The restaurant is certainly aiming to look high-end and glamorous, it looks a little like a vegas lounge bar and I half expected a crooner to be warbling away next to a grand piano!
I like steak, so the choice of main course was a pretty obvious one for me, one fillet steak, medium rare, however to try and avoid being stuffing ourselves completely, we opted to for the sharing platter for the starter. Two Bang bang chicken skewers, fish cakes, duck spring rolls and calamari, and it was a pretty good decision, if only for the portion sizes; whilst the calamari was perfectly cooked, soft and tender if a little on the salty side, the fish cakes were... fish cakes (I'm confused as to why these always feature, they aren't difficult to make and I've never ever been bowled over by one), and the chicken skewers a little on the dry side. The saving grace was the duck spring rolls, next time I'll just order a portion of them for myself I think.
With our wine glasses topped up, the steaks arrived. Fillet for me, rump for Clare. And it was good, which is just as well given the name of the establishment, a tender, succulent cut, which was a little over how I like it but I can forgive that as it was a wonderful piece of meat, well aged and well rested. DELISH! I ordered mine with mashed potatoes and a skewer of garlic king prawns, the mash was ok but nothing special (I guess I'd call it 'rustic', not smooth not lumpy just good ole mashed potatoes) and the king prawns were tasty because GARLIC but de-heading prawns seemed like an additional faff that wasn't needed.
For dessert we plumped for the liquid variety, with two 'shot' style cocktails; One Jaffa Cake - Santa Teresa Rhum Orange liqueur, Mozart Dark Chocolate liqueur and whipping cream
- and one Sweet Apple Pie - Fresh apple juice, Zubrowka Bison Grass vodka, cinnamon syrup and cream. The latter was delicious, with the cinnamon syrup and dusting a smart touch, tasted like there was pastry in the drink!
Overall the meal was ok, but too often let down by some small, easily fixed issues. A little more attention to detail and flavouring and this could easily be a 5-star place, but for me the food didn't really hit the bar they seem to be setting for themselves. And maybe that's the problem, it feels a little like they are trying too hard to be an upmarket restaurant, with prices to match. They either need to improve the quality of what comes out of the kitchen or drop their prices a touch.
Throughout the night the staff were helpful, friendly and chatty at the right times, distant and observant when needed. Aside from the small quibbles I enjoyed the bulk of the meal, but can't say I'm in a mad dash to return. -

We visited The Grill on the Corner during their manic 50% off January deal (50% off food - too good to resist!). I've dined her quite a few times so knew what to expect - a good selection of steaks and tasty starters. And after last year's cocktail making masterclass, my first request was a passion fruit sling. The bar girl whipped it up really quickly and clearly with lots of skill, and served up one of the best cocktails I've had in a long time - and it was topped with half a passion fruit. And only £6.50 which I think is a good price for a cocktail in the city centre.
We had arrived early for drinks in the bar before our dinner booking and got a booth. I really like the bar area, I think it's generous size and comfy booths would make a good cocktail stop whether or not you were dining there. Right on time, a waitress came to collect us for our table and took our coats so all we had to carry were our drinks which I thought was a nice touch.
The dining area in the GOTC is really beautiful - lots of glitz and glamour with the leather seats, chandeliers and the fairy lights in the window. Our table was an oval shaped booth tucked away in a corner as our booking was for 8 people but there was only 6 of us. This was probably my only criticism of the evening - the way the booth was shaped made conversation difficult (and with the background noise) so you could only really talk to the people immediately next to you. If there had of been 8 of us I think it would have been a lot worse!
I started with cheddar and spring onion croquettes. Three croquettes with a portion of salad, these were lovely and crisp. I think the filling needs a bit more of a punch to it as the flavours are a bit mild but I think that's how they're meant to be. I'd definitely get them again though as I am croquette-obsessed.
Because we were getting 50% off, I decided to go for the fillet steak on the "Best of British menu" - this is a changing menu where they feature a few cuts at a premium price. I can't remember which beef was featured on that menu but it was around £34 for a fillet steak of 220g. I opted for blue cheese sauce and chips with mine. The steak was a little pale on the outside - I like a nice sear on it but not enough to complain about. It was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and I had no trouble devouring the whole thing! The sauce was lovely and rich and a really good sized jug so I didn't run out. The chips are consistently good - rough cut with the skin still on and lovely and crispy.
I had a lemon sorbet to finish. I remember last time I ordered this it had a slightly strange taste but there wasn't anything of the sort this time. The bill came to around £35 each - that was for a cocktail, 3 course meal and soft drinks. Seriously good value and a fantastic night out. Moving into February they're doing a lobster deal so I think I'll be tempted back sooner rather than later!
